Fun with the Kids Friday: Tornado in a Tube

When I was in 7th Grade, I had a pretty awesome science teacher. I don't remember exactly what made him awesome, but I distinctly remember him being awesome.

Three things I do remember:
1. His name was Mr. Condon....yup that was his name.
2. He was rather fond of Mariah Carey.
3. He had the most awesome Tornado in a Tube.

I loved that thing. He would swirl, twist, tip and produce a water tornado every time.

Obviously I have remembered that little bit of science fun over the years. I have been wanting to recreate our own Tornado in a Tube for a while. Finally the other day I just happened to remember the Tornado in a Tube right at the same time I was passing the soda aisle at the grocery store.

In the time it took for us to drink two  2-liters of soda, we had our very own Tornado in a Tube...BAM!

 Easiest thing to make ever.

The part that takes the longest is drinking the soda. So if you already have two empty bottles, the hard part is done.

You will need some duct tape.

Of course you will need water.

Then to make things fun you can add some Monopoly houses or maybe even some food coloring.

You simply fill one of the plastic bottles 3/4 full of water. Then you add in the food coloring and/or teeny tiny houses.

Take the empty bottle and turn it upside down placing the mouths of the bottles together. Wrap strips of duct tape to secure the bottles together.

Keep wrapping, around and around. You really want to just keep wrapping until you have the necks of the bottle completely wrapped up too.

When in doubt, keep wrapping. You want it wrapped up enough that it doesn't leak.

Now, it still might leak a little OR will start to leak after a lot of playing.

Because it will get played with for sure.

With everything all taped up, the fun can begin.

Just grab the Tornado Tube by the taped part.

Turn it over and shake and twirl the whole thing.

Then just wait and watch as the water tornado forms.

The whole thing is very cool and my boys loved it. They used it so much and created so many tornadoes that it I had to re-tape it!

After making these, I did find that there is an online store that sells Tornado Tubes, that are made to attach the two bottles together. Hence no more duct tape. So if you think ahead enough you could always order some of those.

My boys really, really loved this. When they happened to walk by the Tornado in a Tube sitting on the counter they couldn't help but reach out and grab, flip, and twirl. Then, mesmerized they would watch another water tornado make its way through the bottom of the tube into the next tape.

Thanks for joining me for another installment of Fun with the Kids Friday .

Fun with the Kids Fridays: Make A Cloud

The other day I mentioned on Facebook that it was in the negatives (yes, I also realize I mentioned it yesterday when I gave my Taco Soup recipe...I am pretty much whining about it everywhere).

One of my friends left me a comment telling me about an experiment you can do if the weather is in the negatives.

Something fun to do outside when the weather is so cold you won't feel your face, finger, elbows, teeth, hair...you get it, it is cold.

So back to the awesome experiment...

When the weather is in the negatives, you can make yourselves some clouds.

All you need is...well the afore mentioned negative degrees of course.

Then you need some hot water. Tea kettle, right off the stove kind of hot. I did try hot tap water, that only partially worked. So make sure it is hot.

Gather your excited and bundled up kiddos.

Pour the hot water into a smaller container, we used the lid to a thermos.

Toss the water away from you up into the air.

Then right before your eyes the water turns into a big, billowy, fluffy cloud.

The boys LOVED it.

I wish I had gotten more pictures, but my fingers stopped being able to function about 30 seconds in. We were also working with a small window of time.

We had realized that this was the last negative temp for awhile, AND it was only going to be negative for the morning. So we had to hustle and make our clouds before the boys had to get to school.

Best start of the day ever.

We are pretty excited for the next below zero day. The good news is we will probably have another one...or two...or three...

I would normally not wish negative degrees on anyone, but if it means you get to watch hot water turn into clouds...totally worth it.

A Pinteresting Saturday: Mad Science

This week for my Pinteresting Saturday project I went to my board that is full of ideas for the Kiddos. I had planned a sewing project, but I decided it was more important to do something with my Little Men this week. They really needed some Boredom Busters. I had a great time going through the different activities and projects I had pinned with them in mind.

I finally landed on a couple of science experiments. My boys are ALL about science stuff lately. I chose these pins--

Fizzy Magic Potion

Science Bob's Lava in a Cup

 No Hand Balloon Inflate

Each of these experiments were easily done with stuff I had around the house. The hardest part was the gathering of supplies and then the clean up...you will see what I mean!

First experiment: Fizzy Magic Potion

you will need:
white vinegar
liquid dish soap
food coloring
baking soda
clear containers
excited kids

Fill each cup about half way with white vinegar. Then add in a couple squirts of soap and a couple drops of food coloring. Stir.

Get a heaping spoonful of baking soda...oh and a couple of towels...

I promise he was more excited than he looks in this photo.

Add the baking soda and get ready!

The fizzy magic starts right away...

Oh-so-excited!!!

It might get out of control. Not sure why the green wen to crazy!

But crazy it did go!

Remember how I said to have towels ready? You will need them here!

This was by far the favorite experiment of the day.

Second experiment: Lava in a Cup

you will need:
water
vegetable oil
food coloring
salt
clear container

This experiment wasn't as exciting for my boys, but it was still fun to watch.

First you fill up the cup 3/4 the way with water. Then stir in a couple of drops of food coloring. Then slowly pour in some oil...I am not sure I used enough and perhaps that is why this experiment wasn't as exciting. Upon re-reading the instructions, I DID NOT add enough oil. You need to add 1/4 cup oil!

Once the oil is in, observe how it floats on top of the water.

Then sprinkle a teaspoon of salt over the top. The salt will immediately sink because salt is heavier than the oil. The salt with take the oil as it goes. Then as the salt dissolves the oil will float back to the top...hence the lava effect.

Our lava effect wasn't too profound...cool, but not to profound.

I would try this one again with more oil next time.

Third experiment: No Hands Balloon Inflate

you will need:
glass bottle
balloon
4 TBS white vinegar
4 TBS baking soda

Add the vinegar to the bottle. Remind your kids it is NOT water or Sprite and that they DO NOT want to drink it...they might ask.

Using a funnel, pour the baking soda into the balloon.

Attach the balloon to the mouth of the bottle making sure that none of the baking soda gets in yet.
Let balloon hang to the side. Then have your little helper slowly lift the balloon over the bottle.

As the baking soda falls in there will be a fuzzy reaction and the gas released will inflate the balloon.

Woohoo!

This experiment was also a hit. Baking soda seemed to win this science battle.

What did you accomplish off your Pinterest list this week? I am still looking for more feedback about the interest in making this a linky party each week. Email me or leave a comment!
