Refashion: Boys' Youth Shirt to Shirt for Momma

Some girls might resent having a chest equal to that of a prepubescent 14 year-old boy. Some, but not me. I actually prefer my athletic chest. Yes, that is what I call it that instead of flat-chested. It makes me feel better about the situation.

The great thing about having an "athletic chest" is that my shirt wardrobe can come from the all over the place. I have several shirts from the girls department. If the shirt is long enough and not too tween in style, then I can rock a sweet girl's XL shirt.

I had never thought of trying out little boys clothes though until a couple of weeks ago when I found a sweet crew neck sweatshirt on clearance in the boys department of Old Navy. Truth...I actually loved it and bought it for Oldest. Then I got home and for some reason hung it up in my closet. Probably because I was too lazy to walk downstairs and hang it up in his closet.

So the next day when I was trying to decide what to wear, I kept staring longingly at the sweatshirt. I decided I should probably just try it on. I mean what could it hurt, right?

I loved it. Therefore, I wore it all day long and it has never made it to Oldest's closet. It is mine now.

With that lovely crew neck sweatshirt in mind, I was more open minded when I looked in the little boys' clothing department.

That is how I found this glorious kelly green gingham gem.

Glorious right?

It was on clearance and looked big enough, so I didn't even try it on. I just bought it and triumphantly carried it home. When I got home, I decided I should try it on just to see how cute it was.

That is when I found a problem.

I may have the chest of a 14 year old boy, but alas I do not have the hips of a 14 year old boy. I have had four babies after all.

The sweatshirt had been cut wider and it was knit, so that problem never arose.

The less forgiving cotton in this button up shirt was not accommodating my  not so boyish hips.

ACK! I was so sad. I wrestled with taking it back, saving it for Oldest, or just dealing with it.

First I tried dealing with it. I wore it over a layering shirt and left the bottom button undone. I hated it.

When I was sharing my woes with a friend, she suggested I just add a panel.

Duh! I should have thought of that.

When I found this print during a recent shopping trip at JoAnn's, it sealed the deal.

This was a really easy refashion and just took under an hour.

So if you are like me, you know flat-chested, here is something you can do to expand your wardrobe options.

At each side seam, I measured up 4" from the bottom hem. I marked it with a pin. Then I cut up, just left of the double seam.

I made a triangle pattern. I added an inch in height and width to accommodate for the seams. I also cut the top tip flat. I cut two triangles from my cut print.

Pin the print fabric to the right side of the cut seam, right sides facing. Pin the triangle with about a 1/2" overlap on the top. That part will tuck under. Sew with 1/4" seam allowance. I chose to use a contrasting thread to make it pop more.

Pin the over side of the print, right sides facing with the other cut edge of the shirt. Carefully sew around the excess at the top. You still want to be able to pull it through to the back.

Press the seams. Then roll up the bottom of the triangle and press to match the hem of the original shirt.

Sew the hem in place. Then sew a line of stitches across the very top securing that excess flap to the inside of the shirt. I also did a kind of top stitch around my new panel for visual cuteness.

Easy as that!

Now I can wear this cute kelly green little boys' shirt all Spring and Summer and not worry about those womanly hips of mine. Ha!

Oh the wardrobe possibilities are endless now! Huzzah!

Sunshine: The Perfect Cure All

Between illnesses, late-stage pregnancy, and all of life's normal stresses that seem to come up when we least need them to, it has been a rough couple of weeks.

I have really been trying to grin and bear my way through it, but being large and super uncomfortable with this pregnancy has made it a little hard. I have not been the perfect example of cheer and delight lately.

On Friday, the perfect cure all came in the form of a bright and sunny day. A pretty rare treat for these parts.

I decided to gather up all the boys (Oldest had the day off of school), make some picnic lunches, and head out to a local park.

Funny enough just getting everyone to the park proved a difficult task and fit right in with the week we had been having. BUT I am happy to say we persevered and after a quick park relocation and some tears (mine and the boys) we finally got out of the car and got to playing in the glorious sunshine.

Yes a good sun-shiney day really can fix anything.

Now if the sun could just encourage Bean to come...okay so I am not 100% ready, so I guess he can stay in a couple more days...

In a Nutshell: Poor Oldest Little Man

We don't mean too, but we seem to find so many fun things to do when Oldest Little Man is at school. Poor Little Man. The argument, "well you have fun at school while we just sit at home" isn't really working anymore. I am really going to have to make it up to him this Summer.

Hubby had to research parks on Friday for work...tough, right? Lucky us...okay again, lucky all of us but Oldest.

Little Men loved the park. The slides. The rides. The walk. The water. The tunnels. The climbing. You name it they loved it.

My favorite...

A day with daddy at the park is just about the absolute best...

In a Nutshell: Popsicles and Confessions

We had an amazingly glorious day at the end of the week. After a week full of rain, we got sun, and that means swim trunks, sprinklers, and popsicles. I even got a little sun on my arms.

We are jumping for joy over here to have playing outside weather.

Now, CONFESSION time. WARNING, if you are eating, have a queasy stomach, or don't love me enough not to judge...then stop reading NOW. Just pretend this blog ended on a happy note of my Little Men eating popsicles.

That being said, here is my confession. I had not cleaned my oven in....well....a really long time. Recently the oven was put on my to do list but kept getting bumped. Then we got a showing on Saturday (YIPPEE) and so Friday I knew I just needed to bust it out.

I knew my oven was a little dirty(p.s. this is after the spray had already been applied and all the filth was breaking down)...

I just didn't know that a little dirty was actually horrifyingly, completely, 100% DIS-gusting. Please still be my friend...

VOMIT.

Needless to say I threw this rag away.

Thank you for letting me take this time to confess my housekeeping shame. I feel better. Now at least my oven is totally clean.

In a Nutshell: Soccer, Soccer, Soccer

Soccer season has begun. That means practices, practices, games, and more games.

It also means lots and lots of smiles from my two older Little Men.

Middle Little Man is excited to be starting his very first season. He plays a younger league that plays 3 on 3 with no goalie. He LOVES his bright orange uniform. He wore it around the house for days before his first game.

It down-poured his first game, he didn't mind at all. Especially when he kicked in a goal.

During rain intermissions, Littlest Little Man enjoyed running around in all the glorious spring mud.

The rain held off for Oldest Little Man's game.

This game was rather monumental for him since in three seasons this was his very first goal!

After he kicked it in, he turned around and simply smiled and pointed to himself basically saying, "Did you see that Mom? That was me that kicked it in."

As I was jumping up and down in the mud I thought to myself, "Yep son, I saw that was you and now I owe you 5 bucks" Best 5 bucks I have ever spent.

Glory Be

Aren't these LOVELY?
Couldn't you just plant these everywhere?
I could.
I want them hanging in baskets...
lining a stone path...
first I need a stone path...
I want them cheerfully greeting me in window boxes.
I think if I could be a flower, I would be this one...alyssum.

Lovely.
Welcome Spring, I have been waiting for you.

These will be making an appearance this week in a project.

Ready for Spring

Two days in a row of spring like weather. Can I get a "HOLLA"?

Spring represents so many things to me. Freshness, newness, green, joy...and the list goes on and on.

I am excited to be getting ready to freshen up my house and our yard (okay only marginally excited about the latter...I loathe yard work). I am excited to start getting our garden ready. I even have a special garden project for our Little Men this year, which I will share soon.

As I was mentally getting ready for spring and reminiscing I remembered this project...

This was one of my FAVORITE projects last year. It was simple, fast, and GORGEOUS. The herbs grew fabulously in my canning jars. I actually kept them inside on my kitchen window sill, a little piece of outside in.

I am going to redo these jars this year, in a color that actually coordinates with my kitchen. I am planning on doing some beautiful variations too. Wanna join me? Gather and save up your canning jars. Get ready to purchase your favorite herbs.

Look for a tutorial in the first week of April and we will make some fresh and lovely herb gardens together.

In a Nutshell: Orange You Excited for Spring?

All week we have been downing fruit. I think we are trying to trick our selves into thinking it is spring. We went through several pounds of grapes, some apples, 2 packages of strawberries, and a whole bag of the most DE-lish oranges.

Even though temperatures were still CHILLY, the sun was shinning brightly. So we opened all the curtains, peeled some oranges and pretended it was warm and lovely outside.

We "spring" cleaned  closets and rooms...well at least a couple of them.

Yes, this last week we really did try to convince ourselves it was spring.

We almost convinced ourselves...

and then this morning...

it SNOWED.

Sigh...I wish I weren't out of oranges.

Psych

For approximately 2 and a half days it was like Spring.
Glory be.
Outside we went.

The playset was played on.
Soccer balls were kicked.
Tiny feet were running.

Oh the sunshine.
Spring?

Psych.
Sigh.
Now it is gone.
Back to indoor, stir crazy Little Men.

There is a silver lining to being forced to stay inside...

I can use my new birthday present.

YIPEEEEE! The list of projects is getting huge.
