Pikachu Halloween Costume

There was a lot of debate over this Pikachu Halloween Costume. Like a lot, A LOT. When Mister Little requested this costume, I was not on board. After all, we barely watch this show and we don't own any Pokemon merchandise.

So I was a little surprised and a lot hesitant. I mean, seriously there are a million other things that would have been cuter. I spent several weeks trying to convince him that other things would be cooler.

Alas, his mind was made up. Since I had said that they all could choose what they wanted to be, I had to surrender.

So the second installment of our no-theme Halloween is this Pikachu costume.

I used the same pattern I used for Daniel Tiger

I changed the pattern to make it Pikachu. I appliqued fleece onto the hood to make his face. I added fleece stripes to the back. I altered the ears and the tail. In order to make the tail more sturdy I used a heavy fabric stabilizer. I also hand stitched part of the tail to the costume so it would stay in place.

I used fleece for this whole costume. He will be so warm and cozy on Halloween night.

I don't know why I fought him on this costume. It turned out really cute and he is SO very happy.

Two more costumes and this no-theme Halloween of 2015 will be done.

Daniel Tiger Halloween Costume

Daniel Tiger in Halloween costume form. Could there be anything cuter? This boy LOVES himself some Daniel Tiger. I have known for months this would be his costume. This year we had a bit of a different situation with Halloween costumes.

Normally we have a family theme. There has been Toy Story, superheroes, Star Wars, Phineas and Ferb, and book characters. I kind of thrive on themed costumes. This year...

There.

Is.

No.

Theme.

Ack.

I figured with two older kids, asking them to somehow fit a theme that includes Daniel Tiger wasn't very practical (or nice). So no theme.

If you follow me on Instagram (@larissa_anotherday) you might already know what some of the other costumes are. None of them going with each other.

Enough about all the no themed costumes already. Let's talk about this Daniel Tiger.

I die.

I started this costume with a basic pattern. I used the Simplicity 1032 pattern. It is a basic jumpsuit with a hood animal pattern.

In order to make Daniel, I had to alter the pattern a bit.

I added strips onto the hood, ears, legs, and tail.

I used the pattern's cat instructions, but I rounded the ears.

Daniel Tiger also needs his red sweater.

I roughly used the pattern to make a sweater. I added applique pockets, a collar, and a jacket zipper.

The pattern does seem to run a little big. This was a size 3T and it is obviously HUGE on him. No worries though, it just makes him more cozy.

The fabric I used for the costume:

fur felt- fur/stripes
red fleece- red sweater
soft flannel-hood lining

He loves it, so I love it. He is so cozy and so cute! I really cannot get over it.

It will be a beautiful day in the neighborhood and a beautiful day for this Daniel Tiger neighbor. No doubt.

Come back tomorrow to see the next costume. Ooh so exciting.

Hiccup Halloween Costume

Introducing Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, otherwise known as Hiccup from How To Train Your Dragon. Also known as the last installment of our Halloween O' Book Characters of 2014.

This Hiccup costume was the last one that we came up with. Mr. Middle and I had a really hard time coming up with a book character for him to be for Halloween. He is kind of in between little kid books and bigger kid books. My sister suggested I dress him up as Mr. Darcy. While he would make just the most handsome Mr. Darcy, I was pretty sure he would not appreciate it. So back to the drawing board.

We went back and forth with different ideas, all of them a little less than stellar. Then one day while driving in the car I suddenly remembered that How To Train Your Dragon was originally a book series.

I presented the idea to Middle and he was immediately on board. He would be Hiccup from How To Train Your Dragon.

Full disclosure, he actually wanted to be Hiccup from the second movie. In a moment of insanity I agreed. Then as I mentally sketched out a possible costume I realized that craziness was never gonna happen.

Hiccup from the second movie is completely clad in leather armor. He also has leather gliding wings. Then there is the whole metal fake leg thing. So I very cleverly talked Middle into being Hiccup from the first movie.

Here is how I talked him into it. I told him there would be fake fur. That did it.

The fake fur makes this costume. Middle did let me know that if he we lived where Hiccup really lived then his vest would probably be made of real fur.

Since we don't live in Berk, I figured fake fur would do just fine.

The majority of this costume was made of fleece. I self drafted every part of this costume. I used existing clothes for patterns. The belt is fake leather. The hardest part of the costume to recreate were Hiccups really big fur boots. I made over sized shoe covers out of felt. Then I made the boot wrappers out of fur. Bam. Boots.

All of that gets one pretty fabulous Hiccup Halloween Costume. There was also one really happy kid.

That is really why I do all this costume hoopla after all. They won't always be young enough to trick or treat. They won't always need/want a costume. So while they are young enough and while they do want a costume, I can happily provide one for them.

This was a really fun Halloween theme. Halloween O' Book Characters two big old thumbs up. I got my theme, but they got all different costumes. Perfect.

So let me say, I am crazy...

Let me finish. I am crazy about Halloween costumes. I also quite enjoy themed costumes for Halloween. This year we went with costumes that are based on book characters.

Our family LOVES the Elephant and Piggie books by Mo Willems. Have you read those books? Oh my word, they are amazing, hilarious, and all together quite fantastic. We have almost all of them, and we read them all the time. All. The. Time.

So it was a no brainer on our Halloween O' Book Characters to dress the youngest two as Gerald the Elephant and Piggie for this Halloween.

Another reason it seemed destined to dress them as Elephant and Piggie is because Gerald, the Elephant, wears glasses and Little wears glasses. It was meant to be.

For both of the costumes I started with Butterick Pattern 3238. I used micro fleece. I altered the tail, the ears, and omitted the elastic in both costumes. The tails and ears are both made to mimic the book characters themselves. I followed then construction instructions I just changed the shapes.

The were a few components not made from the pattern.

For Gerald, I added the toenails in a lighter fleece. I cut 3 half circles for each "leg". That was 12 total. Then I sewed them on to the edge of the sleeves and the end of the splats (shoe covers).  I also made a simple trunk by sewing a tube, filling it with batting and then attaching it to a piece of fleece. Then I sewed elastic to the ends of the fleece..

For sweet little Piggie, I only added a cute but ridiculously large piggy snout. I sewed to black felt slits to the front of an oval piece of fleece. Then I attached a piece of elastic.

Did I mention anything about the cuteness?

Elephant and Piggie are a pretty good start to our Halloween O' Book Characters.

A Phineas and Ferb Halloween: Phineas

"There's 104 days of Summer vacation
And school comes along just to end it.
So the annual problem for our generation
is finding a good way to spend it.

Like maybe...
Building a rocket
Or fighting a mummyOr climbing up the Eiffel Tower."

Did you find yourself singing along with this oh-so-catchy little cartoon theme song?
Our family can sing all the words in unison. My favorite song...Gitchy, Gitchy Goo (Means That I Love You).

We love ourselves some Phineas and Ferb. Seriously, the whole family loves it. There are very few shows that I will happily watch with my kids all while being genuinely entertained.

Phineas and Ferb is my most favorite kids' show. I laugh out loud and I sing along to all of their super funny and creative songs.

I have wanted to have Phineas and Ferb themed Halloween for years. In fact, the first time I contemplated doing it was when Little was small enough to be Perry. I chickened out of doing the costumes due in large part to those pesky little odd shape noggins.

Fast forward a few years and some slightly improved sewing skills, and Little originally the size of Perry the Platypus, is now the size of the ingenious master mind of Summer fun who the show is named for.

Phineas Flynn

Goosh.

He is cute.

These costumes were fairly simple to make. The only glitch I had was in the making costumes of characters based in the Summer warm enough to be used in the crispness of a Halloween night.

In order to help Fallify the Summer clothes, I used warm and cozy materials. The shirt is made from orange and cream flannel. The shorts are made from blue fleece. Then to make them even warmer and cozier, I used cream colored fleece to act as "skin". I made leggings. I added in sleeve inserts.

The fleece was also used to make the quirky little triangle head.

So there ya have it, a warm version of a Phineas costume.

So guys the question is...

"What are we going to do today?"

He knows what we are going to do today...

We are gonna trick or treat and make a candy-riffic haul.

Come back tomorrow for another Phineas and Ferb Halloween
costume reveal!

Luke Skywalker-Star Wars Halloween Finale

This young Jedi in training wishes you a very Happy Halloween.

This was the costume I was finishing yesterday exactly 45 minutes before our Halloween party.

I left the Skywalker costume till last because I figured it was the easiest...

Hahahaha...

Sometimes I am delusional...

Okay most the time I am delusional.

My mental stability aside, it got done and I super love how Luke turned out.

Again, I sewed everything but the accessories out of a lightweight fleece. Now if you ask my machine if the fleece was lightweight, it would probably "Hurmph" at me. My machine definitely did not like sewing all this fleece.

Tiny Chewbacca probably broke my machines will right off the bat.

Skywalker's faux boots also seriously strained my machine. I am really happy though with how that part turned out. We seem to always be making costumes that require boots. I have made shoe covers before and they always get trashed. So for the last several costumes I made the bottom of the pants look like the top of the boots. Then the boys just wear regular shoes.

To make Luke's faux boots I sewed on individual strips of felt onto the bottom of the pants. I layered them a little like mummy wrapping. I totally think that they look similar to Luke's boots.

Unfortunately all of those felt strips being attached to my "lightweight" fleece made for slow and tedious sewing.

My machine and I were fighting by the end.

Thank heavens, she hung in there and all the costumes got done. There was a minute or two where I had the very real fear they wouldn't.

Luckily Oldest was able to be a Jedi and didn't have to squeeze into his Wolverine costume from last year.

Not a huge Star Wars buff, but even I know Wolverine doesn't really seem to fit in.

We almost didn't have a light saber either. I had plans to make some...I still might try my idea some day. However, time, um kind of, um got away from me. So yesterday morning I was running around town looking for a light saber.

Luckily it only took a couple of stores.

Luke wouldn't be Luke without one.

I even made a belt out of felt with a loop to attach his light saber too. He looked pretty legit.

Finishing the Luke Skywalker costume rounded out our Star Wars Halloween of 2012.

I am not sure which costume is my favorite. Which one do you like best? If you can choose that is...hahaha.

I got one picture of them all together. It was rouuuuughfff. Hence the not-so-perfect shot. Still I thought it would be fun to see them all together.

So grateful to be the Momma to these Little Men.

Looking forward to our little Halloween.

Happy Halloween to all of you. Be safe and have fun.

Thanks for reading.

Luke I am Your Father

Happy Halloween friends!

A day for tricking. A day for treating. A day to dress up and gather obscene amounts of candy.

A day to pilfer candy off your children. Hmm...yum. I can already taste those fun size snicker bars.

A day to kick up your feet and shout "Hallelujah!".  A day when the costumes are actually done and ready to use.

I finished my last costume literally 45 minutes before we had a church Halloween party last night. Forty-five minutes people!

Cutting it close much?!?

With all that sewing and pulling out of my hair, it didn't leave much time for photo taking.

However, I dragged my little Darth Vader outside so I could snap a couple of pictures of his dark side cuteness.

He is quite intimidating is he not?

There will probably be another post today. After all, we have a very important Jedi to introduce you to. That will round out my little Star Wars crew.
